CCTV Tester Use During On-Site Camera Acceptance

How the shipped CCTV testers work at coaxial and network points: multi-format image confirmation, coaxial control, cable checks and how the acceptance checklist is filled.

Preparation Before Departure

Field support usually takes two testers: the VDC-IPC-9800ADH Plus and the VDC-X7-ADH PLUS. Both use 7 inch touch screens at 1920x1200 and display H.264 and H.265 network images as well as 4K main streams. The units carry built-in batteries and also offer DC 12V 3A and 5V 2A outputs to temporarily power cameras on site, removing the need to bring extra adapters. Carried accessories are short BNC cables, RJ45 patch cords, HDMI cables and adapters, in quantities matched to the number of points.

Before departure the work order is printed with position numbers, models, video standards and preset frame rates, and results on the tester are entered directly against this sheet. Points changed on site get their actual wiring recorded before testing, so the original design drawing is never used to judge the site. The sheet keeps an extra column for abnormality numbers; back at the plant, camera problems and line problems are archived separately by number, and retests only work through numbers not yet closed.

Reading Coaxial Points

Coaxial HD points feed the tester through a short BNC cable. The tester supports 8MP TVI, 8MP AHD and 8MP CVI testing, displaying 3840x2160 at 15fps, with 4x zoom for detail observation plus local recording and playback, used to confirm whether the line is stable at full resolution. On long runs, the same camera is connected straight to the tester with a short cable as a control, which separates problems in the line from problems in the camera itself.

Models with coaxial control open their OSD menu on the tester to change the video standard and frame rate, set privacy masking and motion detection, and drive PTZ up, down, left, right and preset actions. Inside the pinhole miniature series some models support UTC coaxial control and some do not, so acceptance treats each model per the marking on the work order; when control fails at a point, whether the model supports it is checked before declaring a fault.

Network Points and Cable Checks

Network points use the tester's Quick ONVIF function: after automatic login the image displays and a test report is generated, and cameras onboarded over ONVIF, such as Axis and Hikvision units, only need a user name and password. The VDC-X7-ADH PLUS has two network ports, one to the camera and one to the switch, and can also run TDR tests on RJ45 cables to check opens, shorts and connector positions. The full-function model adds cable tracing, an analog video level meter, a digital multimeter, an optical power meter and a red laser pen, so fiber segments and power lines are verified on the same unit.

Nonconformities recorded on site fall into three kinds: no image, abnormal image, and control failure. For no image, check power supply and wire sequence first; for abnormal image, check the line and connector oxidation first; for control failure, check the protocol and address first. The handling result for each kind is written after the matching position number on the acceptance sheet and signed jointly by the installer and the accepting party.

Acceptance Checklist Entries

The acceptance checklist is filled per position, with entries mapping one-to-one to the check methods in the sections above; on site items are only ticked and recorded, never concluded verbally. Completed sheets are kept by the installer, the supervisor and the equipment party, and the scanned copy is archived with the acceptance report. Later added points and retests are verified against this checklist as the baseline.

  • Position number and model match the drawing, body serial numbers registered
  • Video standard and frame rate follow the order preset, PAL 25fps or NTSC 30fps
  • Coaxial points output stably at the rated resolution, no rolling or mosaic artifacts
  • Network points stream normally over ONVIF or RTSP and a test report is generated
  • Day-night switching and IR illumination work normally, no visible color shift
  • PTZ control, presets and tours execute as configured
  • Cables and connectors pass inspection, cable length and routing path confirmed

Back-at-Plant Review and Spare Support

Units that cannot be judged on site return to the Shenzhen plant and rerun the shipment-standard checks on a production-line bench before a conclusion. Differences caused by firmware settings are fixed on site; line and power problems go to the installer for correction and then a retest.
